Nursing student work experience in the UK care sector

Key Takeaways
Nursing student work experience in the UK is the practice hours your university signs off, plus whatever you can fit around a placement block. Bank shifts and social care both count in an interview. A brand ambassador role will not sign off your PAD.
If you searched this on the way back from placement, you want the short version. The ward hours count. A future employer can also see what you have done off the rota. So can a family.
This is for student nurses, nursing associates, and anyone on a healthcare course who wants time in the care sector that is not another bay of six. If you have just graduated, or you already post about shifts, the last section is the one to read. If you are here because a parent needs a carer, the hourly cost guide is the other page.
What counts as nursing student work experience
For an NMC-approved nursing degree, the hours that count toward registration are the practice learning hours your university signs off. The Nursing and Midwifery Council currently requires 2,300 practice learning hours, and up to 600 of those can be simulated. A Saturday bank shift, a post about a night shift, and an evening talking to other students do not replace a practice assessor.
They still count as experience in the ordinary sense. Interview panels ask what you have seen outside the hospital you were allocated. NHS England's student hub tells newly registered nurses to look at social care, care homes, supported living, domiciliary care, and hospices, and to start that look three to six months before qualifying.
If you are on a nursing associate, midwifery, occupational therapy, or another healthcare course, the hour rules above are the nursing ones. The ambassador section further down still applies.
The social care placement you may not get
Skills for Care, with the Council of Deans of Health, published the first undergraduate strategy aimed at social care placements for student nurses and nursing associates. The Department of Health and Social Care's line in that work is that there should be social care placement opportunities for every student nurse. The 10 Year Health Plan, published on 3 July 2025, says the Chief Nursing Officer's strategy will require time in neighbourhood, community, and social care settings.
I do not know when your university will actually put you on a domiciliary round or in a care home. The paper is a strategy. Your next block may still be an acute ward. Ask the placements office anyway, and say social care out loud. Some courses still treat it as the option that fills a gap.
Before the bank will take you
NHS Professionals will take student nurses onto the staff bank as a healthcare assistant or care support worker, in acute and mental health settings, after 12 weeks of clinical placement. Until that box is ticked, care homes, supported living, and home-care providers are the usual places that will roster around a block.
Leah is in the second year of adult nursing in Salford. Her September block is 37.5 hours on an orthopaedic ward. The bank form still says she is short of the 12 weeks. In October the evenings are empty. She already posts short notes about shifts, with names taken out, to a few thousand people who are mostly other students.
Home care is the setting most placement circuits still skip. Visiting care and live-in care are different jobs. One is a run of calls. One is someone living in the house. If you have only worked a bay, a Tuesday morning in a kitchen in Eccles is a different judgement: the tablets are in a dosette on the microwave, the daughter is on a train, and you are the only uniform there.
Skills for Care's 2025/26 report put the adult social care vacancy rate in England at 6.2%, about 96,000 vacant posts, the lowest since 2015/16. In independent-sector domiciliary care the vacancy rate was still 9.1%. The same report says the sector is likely to need another 410,000 posts by 2040, to keep up with the number of people over 65.
How Match with Care can help
We are hiring brand ambassadors. The fit is a student in a field related to healthcare, someone who has just graduated, or someone who already makes content about working in the UK care sector.
The work is to help us explain the company, on campus and online, without dressing it up. Match with Care is a managed introductory care marketplace. We interview carers, check an enhanced DBS, right to work, and references, and families choose who comes into the home. We are not a domiciliary care agency, and we are not CQC-registered as a care provider. Introductory matching is not regulated that way.
If you speak for us, that distinction is the bit to get right. The list families should expect is in 7 checks before using a home care matching platform. Stick to that list.
If you want a sense of how an experienced carer talks about the work, Rose's account is a better starting point than a caption under a stock photo of a ward.
This will not count toward your 2,300 hours. It will not pay a rent bill the way a bank shift might. If you already post, send one link. Leave out anything that could identify a patient, a placement, or a person drawing on care: names, house numbers, distinctive wounds, voice notes from a bay.
Email hello@matchwithcare.com. Say what you study or when you graduated, and where you are based.

No. It will not sign off practice hours, and it is not a clinical placement. It is a way to explain UK care in public, on campus or online, while you are still a student or newly qualified.
